US September CPI came in hotter than expected.

Headline inflation printed at 3.7% year-over-year, beating the Dow Jones consensus of 3.6%. Core CPI, which strips out volatile food and energy, hit 2.6% YoY versus the 2.5% forecast. Both numbers overshot. Bitcoin dropped to ~$82,885 (-0.5% in 24 hours), Ethereum to ~$2,484, as traders repriced the odds of another Fed rate hike.

This was not the cool surprise the market hoped for. It was a reminder that inflation is still running hot — and the Fed still has work to do.

The Numbers: Both Measures Beat Expectations

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported:

  • Headline CPI: 3.7% YoY (expected 3.6%, previous 3.4%)
  • Headline CPI MoM: +0.6% (expected +0.6%, previous +0.4%)
  • Core CPI: 2.6% YoY (expected 2.5%, previous 2.4%)
  • Core CPI MoM: +0.2–0.3% (expected +0.2%, previous +0.3%)

The headline acceleration from 3.4% to 3.7% was expected — energy prices drove nearly the entire increase, with gasoline prices surging on Middle East supply disruptions. But the fact that it landed at 3.7% rather than 3.6% matters: it means the energy pass-through was slightly stronger than economists modeled.

Core matters more for the Fed — it excludes food and energy and gauges underlying pressure. At 2.6% vs 2.5% expected, core is moving the wrong way: up from 2.4% in August. Two straight months of acceleration in the Fed’s preferred measure.

The gap between headline (3.7%) and core (2.6%) is 1.1 percentage points — almost entirely energy-driven. But the Fed cannot dismiss core’s uptick as “just energy” when core itself is rising.

What This Means for the Fed: December Hike Odds Jump

The Fed meets October 28. Markets priced ~20% hike odds before tonight’s print. The hotter CPI doesn’t flip October — the Fed won’t hike two weeks after a CPI release — but it strengthens the case for December.

December hike odds, already around 70% before the print, likely tick higher. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking Friday, will face direct questions about whether tonight’s numbers justify another increase. New York Fed President John Williams said recently he expects one more hike this year and none in 2027. Tonight’s data supports that view.

The Fed’s challenge: headline inflation is being driven by energy supply shocks (Middle East disruptions, oil near $106/barrel) — the kind of inflation rate hikes address poorly. But core rising to 2.6% suggests underlying price pressures are not fully contained either. The Fed cannot afford to look complacent.

For the October 28 meeting, expect a hawkish hold: rates unchanged, but language signaling that December is live. The Fed will want to see October CPI (due November 10) and the PPI data (Thursday, 19:30 VN) before committing.
